Can AirPods Pro 2 Truly Take the Place of Hearing Aids? We Asked a Grandmother.

Can AirPods Pro 2 Replace Hearing Aids? I Asked My Grandmother. Apple's AirPods Pro 2 come with some new features that help with hearing. But do they really work well? To find out, I asked my grandmother, who is in her eighties, to try them for a week. These wireless earphones have a special hearing-aid feature along with other tools to help with hearing health. Apple calls it “the world’s first all-in-one hearing health experience.” To see how useful these features are, I asked my grandmother, who regularly uses hearing aids, to test them for a week. Introducing My Grandmother Let me share a bit about my grandmother. She started using a smartphone made for older people when she was in her late seventies. About two years ago, she switched to an iPhone SE because family members wanted her to use the Apple Watch's fall detection feature. Now, she knows how to use it well. For this review, she used an iPhone 16. Since she is familiar with Apple products, it was easy for her to help with this review of the AirPods Pro 2. In contrast, my late grandfather used Android and often found it hard to use an iPhone. Older users may take time to adjust to a new system, even if it’s on the same smartphone. My grandmother has always had good hearing, but it has gotten worse as she aged. This year, she was diagnosed with mild hearing loss and started using hearing aids on her doctor’s advice. She rarely uses earphones, so this was her first time trying AirPods. A Quick Hearing Test The Hearing Health features were added to the AirPods Pro 2 at the end of October 2024. The two main new features are the Hearing Test and the Hearing Aid function. The Hearing Test checks for signs of hearing loss, while the Hearing Aid function helps users hear better, similar to a hearing aid, based on the test results. Both features need a smartphone with the latest iOS. To take the Hearing Test, go to Settings > AirPods Pro > Take Apple’s Hearing Test. During the test, you simply tap the screen whenever you hear a sound. It’s important to be in a quiet place and make sure the AirPods Pro 2 fit well in your ears. The earpieces were a bit too big for my grandmother, and she had to adjust them carefully. Although the AirPods Pro 2 are heavier than hearing aids, my grandmother said they felt fine once they were in place. If you have taken a hearing test before, this process will feel similar. You just follow simple instructions on the screen. My grandmother's results were very close to those from a test done by a hearing aid expert. However, if someone’s results don’t match those from a specialist, they can enter the professional results manually. The Hearing Aid Feature Works Well After taking the hearing test, there is no need to change any settings. Just put in the AirPods Pro 2 and turn off the noise-canceling feature. This way, you can hear everything around you clearly. Conversations and everyday sounds, like flipping a page or a door closing, become louder. My grandmother said, “I don’t feel any discomfort because I wear hearing aids all the time.” As someone who loves music, she was happy that she could hear it clearly. The Media Assist mode, which adjusts settings for music, videos, and phone calls, worked great. She also enjoyed being able to hear both high and low notes clearly, even when music was playing on the TV.
